Position Title: Kitchen Assistant/Cook
Classification: Hourly
Immediate Supervisor: Kitchen Lead
Position Overview:
Kitchen Assistants perform all cleaning, washing and preparation duties required in a kitchen setting. The Kitchen Assistant
will assist Cooks and Kitchen Leads with all tasks necessary to ensure that kitchen operations run smoothly. The Kitchen
Assistant's responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting the Cook with ingredient preparation, assisting with
removing the garbage, washing garbage cans, clearing refrigerators, freezers and storage rooms. The Kitchen Assistant
will exercise exceptional time management to ensure all duties are completed in a timely manner and be able to comply
with all food health and safety regulations.
Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities
A. Cleaning and Sanitation
- Properly cleans and sanitizes all food preparation areas according to established standards of hygiene.
- Washes and appropriately stores all cooking appliances, instruments, utensils, cutting boards and dishes.
- Sweeps and mops the kitchen floors as well as wiping down kitchen walls.
- Assists with cafeteria set-up or clean-up.
- Performs daily, weekly and monthly deep cleaning of the facility, service areas and all kitchen equipment such as counters, tables, ovens, refrigerators, freezers, mixers, transient hot carts, mobile carts and rolling racks.
B. Food Preparation
- Assists the Cook with the preparation of meal ingredients, which includes washing, cleaning, peeling, cutting, and chopping fruit, vegetables, poultry and meat.
- Promptly transfers meal ingredients from storage areas to the kitchen as per the Cook's instructions.
- Assists with the unloading of delivered food supplies.
- Prepares breakfast bags and delivers to classrooms daily.
- Retrieves breakfast bags from classrooms daily and cleans and repacks for next breakfast.
C. Safety
- Operates equipment properly to assure safety and to avoid damage to the equipment.
- Maintains clean and safe work environment as well as performs job safely.
- Utilizes kitchenware safely such as, but not limited to, knives, spatulas, whisks, tongs, spoons and ladles.
D. Additional Responsibilities
- Adheres to policies and procedures as outlined in the Riverside Employee Handbook.
- Responsible for maintaining the highest standards of personal hygiene and appearance.
- Establishes effective working relationships with other members of the school staff.
- Promotes the overall effectiveness by performing tasks and sharing responsibilities with members of the department during peak periods or when there is an overload of duties.
- Attends trainings for continued professional development.
- Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Child Nutrition Services Manager.
Education
- High school diploma or GED
Licenses or Certifications
- Valid Maricopa County Food Handler’s Card
- A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Experience
- General knowledge, training or experience with food preparation and service
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- General knowledge of food preparation and standards of sanitation and safety.
- General knowledge of proper storage methods for various foods, supplies, and equipment.
- General knowledge of how to operate and clean kitchen equipment.
- Ability to properly clean kitchen area, equipment and utensils.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to communicate in a pleasant, positive manner with students, staff, parents, and coworkers.
- Ability to pre-plan, set priorities and manage time to meet production timelines.
- Physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, push food carts, bend, and reach, as well as stand for extended periods.
- Knowledge and practice of health and safety standards.
- Ability to safely operate commercial ovens, mixers, stoves, can openers and food warmers.
- Self-motivated and self-directed.
- Works well as part of a team and on individual tasks.
Working Environment
- The working environment is in the cafeteria kitchen and dining room that includes exposure to noise and vibrations from kitchen equipment, fumes and odors from grease traps and heat from stoves and ovens.
- The nature of the environment requires the employee frequently to work with/near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to airborne particles and cleaning chemicals.
Terms of Employment
- Nine-months, At-Will, hourly, benefits in accordance with Governing Board policies.
