STEM Instructional Coach

SUMMARY:
The STEM Instructional Coach, having both content and instructional expertise, will work as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning and teacher practice. The STEM Instructional Coach will focus on individual and group professional learning that will expand and refine the understanding about researched-base effective instruction for teachers. In order to meet this purpose, the STEM Instructional Coach will provide personalized, one-to-one support based on the goals and identified needs of individual teachers.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with school administration to design and provide professional development focused on improving alignment and delivery of the written, taught and tested curriculum to increase student success and close performance gaps
- Serve as a content reading, writing, science and math specialist to assist in the development and implementation of campus instructional plans that align to district goals and curriculum
- Work with teachers and campus administration to analyze student assessment data, diagnose instructional needs and identify research-based instructional strategies to close achievement gaps
- Provide job-embedded professional development for teachers through modeling engaging, standards-based teaching, as needed
- Collaborate with teachers to review, develop and plan standards-based lessons and assessments aligned to the district curriculum
- Manage and distribute instructional resources to teachers and provide training on the use of those resources
- Encourage and support the implementation of technology and innovative strategies in the classroom
- Provide individual and/or group instructional coaching and mentoring to teachers to improve classroom instruction for all learners
- Conduct teacher observations and/or walk-throughs and provide feedback that facilitates teacher reflection and growth
- Provide ongoing feedback to school administration to be used in the teacher evaluation process
- Assist with the campus strategic plan and formulation of the CIP
- Assist teachers with the collection and analysis of data results
- Evaluate student achievement and assist with placing students in the appropriate intervention and support service
- Identify needs and make recommendations for appropriate instructional materials and assessments that directly support and align to the Arizona Common Core State Standards, International Benchmarks and Next Generation Science Standards
- Meet regularly with PLC teams and the school principal to report on instructional practices and progress while also planning “next steps” for student and school improvement
- Collaborate with teachers to identify the instructional needs of students, to set learning goals and targets, and to problem solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth of students
- Provide professional development on best practices in literacy, math and STEM instruction across the curriculum
- Work with the principal to create the school's professional development plan, structure related coaching, and identify specific, measurable and attainable benchmarks for teacher and student performance
- Provide specific integration and differentiation strategies that enable teachers to meet the needs of all learners
- Read, comprehend, and prepare various kinds of communication and information including emails, correspondence, reports, articles, proposals, policies, charts, spreadsheets, curriculum documents, staff development plans, educational forms and data
- Oversee the school’s assessment procedure, training, data collection and collaborate with the principal to complete reports due
- Work collaboratively with teachers to provide integrated, engaging, and meaningful hands-on STEM oriented instruction (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through inquiry and problem/project-based learning methods
- Provides assistance to teachers and staff members in planning and incorporating STEM activities into classroom instruction
- Shares best practices and provides professional development in STEM education with colleagues
- Serves on the STEM Integration Curriculum Committee and contributes to all discussions about STEM subjects
- Demonstrate willingness to assume leadership positions
- Assist teachers with specific classroom activities when requested
- Provide support for classroom motivation and management strategies
- Assist teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with the curriculum
- Provide teachers resources related to instruction and curriculum
- Provide assistance in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues
- Model effective, differentiated instruction when requested
- Provide encouragement and emotional support to teachers
- Encourage ongoing professional growth for all teachers
- Manage time and schedule flexibility to maximize teacher schedules and learning
- Work positively toward meeting identified district and building school improvement goals
- Assist with development of district curriculum, instruction and assessments
- Develop and maintain a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers
- Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by school principal
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
- Master’s degree in Instruction and Curriculum, preferred
- Reading and Mathematics Endorsements, preferred
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- A valid Arizona teacher certification
- Highly Qualified (HQ) as defined by the Arizona Department of Education
- Full SEI Endorsement
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous coaching or teacher leadership experience, required
- Advanced technology experience and training, required
- Experience in development, preparation and presentation of professional development, preferred
- 5+ years of successful teaching experience in a STEM-related area, preferred
- Experience working with English Language Learning students, preferred
- Deep knowledge of and experience in:
- a) Arizona Common Core Standards
- b) Next Generation Science Standards
- c) Inquiry Learning
- d) Problem/Project Based Learning
- e) Research-based Instructional Best Practices/Strategies in Reading and Math
- f) Assessment/Data Driven Instruction
- Experience in analyzing student achievement data
- Experience working with 5th – 8th graders
- Advanced training in instruction, curriculum, technology integration, and student management
- Experience working with an ethnically diverse urban population

- Knowledgeable about current research on evidence based instructional strategies in core content areas (reading, writing, math)
- Ability to design and deliver quality professional development for teachers
- Demonstrated ability to analyze student data and make recommendations to improve student achievement
- Knowledge of adult learning theory
- Interpret, infer, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate materials, resources, situations and problems to generate options and solutions
- Solid understanding of STEM education
- Ability to speak, writes, and read Spanish fluently, preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work environment is a normal school setting; the noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is usually moderate. The playground setting can include exposure to dirt, dust, and extreme seasonal temperatures.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month, Certified - Exempt; benefits in accordance with Board policies.
EVALUATION:
Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of Certified Staff.
