Position Title: Physical Education Wellness Paraprofessional
Classification: Hourly
Immediate Supervisor: School Principal
Position Overview:
The primary focus of the P.E. Wellness Paraprofessional position is to work in collaboration the P.E. teacher to create a
classroom environment that promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function, wellness
and exercise in order to cultivate physical fitness and appropriate social and emotional wellness.
Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities
1. Incorporate in the physical education classroom health/wellness/social/emotional learning to all grade-levels.
2. Provide appropriate safety instruction and supervision at all times.
3. Oversee and foster the academic, social emotional and character development of each student.
4. Plan and implement school-wide health awareness events.
5. Help develop and maintain long range and daily instructional plans for each class using a variety of teaching and assessment tools and strategies.
6. Integrate health technology seamlessly into teaching to facilitate an understand of the importance of wellness.
7. Help develop and implement lessons that promote healthy life styles.
8. Actively involve students in the classroom through group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques.
9. Establish and maintain standards of student conduct with cooperation of the school administration.
10. Maintain professional competence through participation in school and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
11. Identify student needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
12. Shares in the sponsorship of school-wide student activities to promote health, wellness and fitness.
13. Support the school’s Wellness Program.
14. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the School Principal and/or District Administration.
Education
• An AA degree or 60 hours of college credits or a passing score on a paraprofessional test is required
Licenses or Certifications
• CPR and First Aid Certificates
• A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
• Substitute Certificate
Experience
• Experience working with an ethnically diverse urban population
• Experience working with minority and ELL students
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
• Bilingual, English and Spanish.
• Ability to relate to the needs of low-income families.
• Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents and administrators.
• Willingness to pursue additional training in job-related areas.
• Ability to bend, carry and lift 40 pounds, kneels, push and pull 25 pounds.
• Ability to maintain a safe, learning environment.
• Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
• Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others.
Working Environment
• The work environment is a normal school setting; the noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is usually moderate.
• The playground setting can include exposure to dirt, dust, and extreme seasonal temperatures.
• Performing the job duties of this position requires the following physical demands: reaching, some lifting, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
• The employee may encounter situations where students are physically aggressive and verbally abusive. This may require physical interaction between the employee and student.
Terms of Employment
• Nine-months, At-Will, hourly; benefits in accordance with Governing Board policies.
Evaluation
• Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Governing Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.
