Position Title: School Nurse

Classification: Hourly

Immediate Supervisor: School Principal

 

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the School Principal and the District LPN, the School Nurse is responsible for planning, implementing,

coordinating and evaluating school health services that maximize the quality of in-class time by reducing the incidence of

health-related absenteeism and eliminate or minimize health problems that impair learning. Other responsibilities include

implementing health care plans directed by a physician, ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating

to student health issues, providing appropriate immediate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students, conducting

mandated health screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow up

treatment. The School Nurse manages students who have chronic health conditions and students with disabilities. This

includes giving them medication as needed and working with parents and teachers to create and enforce care plans. The

School Nurse serves as a health care resource to teachers, staff, and administrators.

 

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities

1. Identify, assess and evaluate the physical well-being of students, be aware of any of their mental and emotional problems, develops health care plans and emergency action plans.

2. Provide accurate log of daily illnesses, accidents, treatment plans & parent communications.

3. Maintain a list of students with major health conditions and provide updates to the staff.

4. Maintain accurate, confidential and appropriate student health records including immunizations.

5. Assess student records for compliance with state mandates for immunization and physical exam requirements.

6. Entering immunization records in Synergy for all students.

7. Submit state reports of immunization, hearing and vision yearly.

8. Order and maintain a proficient amount of supplies for health services.

9. Provide a yearly inventory report of health office medication, supplies etc.

10. Travel between school sites to assist with medical emergencies.

11. Provide health screening services in the areas of vision, hearing, obvious bone structure, skin conditions, genetic maladies, growth and development and follow up on issues identified.

12. Maintain current emergency card information. This includes vision and hearing screening, heights and weights, and other individual information for all grade levels.

13. Assume the responsibility for emergency care for students who are ill or injured.

14. Provide administration with injury or emergency reports for both student and school staff and follow district procedures in contacting outside agencies when necessary.

15. Maintain an accurate inventory & record of all controlled substance received with consent to administer as directed by the ordering physician.

16. Provide transportation to home, for students who are injured or become ill at school when necessary.

17. Analyze and evaluate student immunization records and past medical histories in order to communicate need for prevention and control of communicable disease and relate this information to parents.

18. Work with state agencies by reporting and providing data helpful in preventing or controlling communicable disease.

19. Provide information on the modes of transmission of communicable disease to student, faculty and parents when necessary.

20. Communicate with parents relative to illness, injury, correction of health problems and the use of community resources such as free immunizations locations.

21. Inform the classroom teacher and other staff members of individual students with special health problems, recommending the adjustment of the educational program until problem can be corrected.

22. Serve as a liaison between parent, school and community in health matters.

 

23. Work cooperatively with Child Protective Services (CPS) and other governmental agencies concerning the welfare of students.

24. Create an effective medication administration system in accordance with Board adopted policy.

25. Provide emergency services for illnesses and injuries occurring at school and enlist the services of paramedics in accordance with plans and procedures developed by the School Principal when needed.

26. Observe students to detect health needs including impetigo, scabies, and lice.

27. Maintain a clean health office including the cleanliness of the beds, sinks and health equipment.

28. Assist students with severe health problems by riding the handicapped bus in the event of emergencies.

29. Provide proficient services for special needs students including tracheotomy suctioning, tracheotomy care, G-tube feeding and care, cauterization, SVNTX via tracheotomy, when and if necessary as directed by ordering physician and scope of certification.

30. Assist with student personal hygiene/toileting as needed.

31. Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.

32. Enforces established infection control policies and procedures on the exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious diseases.

33. Complies with laws, regulations, protocols and School Board policies/procedures as they apply to school health services.

34. Performs usual office routines and practices associated with a busy, productive office, primarily during the school secretary’s lunch or absence.

35. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the School Principal.

 

Education

• Medical Assistant degree

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

 

 

Licenses or Certifications

• Possession of a valid Arizona Driver’s License

• Negative TB clearance within last 12 months

• A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

• A valid CPR and First Aid Certification

 

 

Experience

• Clinical experience working with school-aged children

and providing health education.

• Previous experience as a school nurse.

 

 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

• Knowledge of current treatments and medications for pediatric health problems.

• Knowledge of control of communicable disease in accordance with State and local mandates.

• Maintain professional boundaries with students and families.

• Must demonstrate an extremely high regard for confidential and sensitive information.

• Must maintain accurate records.

• Skills in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and the Internet.

• Bilingual, English and Spanish.

• English proficiency in reading, writing and speaking.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents and administrators.

• Demonstrates the ability to work effectively under pressure.

• Must be organized with the ability to multitask.

• Must be detailed-oriented and self-motivated.

• Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and/or assistance.

• Must demonstrate flexibility, common sense and good judgment.

• Ability and desire to provide outstanding customer service.

• Able to bend, lift 40 pounds and stand/walk for extended periods of time.

Working Environment

• The working environment is a typical school nursing office with occasional travel among school sites.

 

Terms of Employment

• Nine-month, At-Will, hourly; benefits in accordance with Governing Board policies.
