Position Title: Custodian

 

Classification: Hourly

 

Immediate Supervisor: Maintenance/Transportation Supervisor

 

Position Overview:

The Facility Worker/Certified Bus Driver works under the supervision of the Maintenance & Transportation Supervisor.

 

The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting all areas of a facility including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming,

dusting, polishing, shampooing carpets, cleaning and restocking restrooms, trash removal, etc., as well as maintaining the

school building and grounds, performing minor maintenance of an assigned building, setting up equipment for special

events and assisting school personnel with work requests. This position also ensures that the site retains a high standard of

cleanliness and reflects a safe operating condition.

 

A. Custodial Responsibilities

1. Following an assigned schedule clean classrooms, offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, lounges, hallways and other facilities as assigned according to approved practices; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other work areas; strip, wax and refinish floors; shampoo and spot clean carpets.

2. Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment including a floor stripper, vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned.

3. Dusts and cleans desks, whiteboards and other furniture.

4. Wash exterior and/or interior windows and walls and replace lights.

5. Clean, scrub and disinfect drinking fountains and student and staff restrooms including doors, mirrors, sinks, tile, walls, floors, toilets and urinals and hardware; replenish paper supplies and soap as necessary and unclog drains and toilets.

6. Clean-up after accidents and spills, cleaning and/or removing marks/graffiti on walls and doors, changing filters, remove cobwebs, removes gum, dusting vents and cleaning eaves, beams and fixtures.

7. Pick up paper, trash and debris around school grounds, in buildings and parking lots, sweep and clean walkways and entrances.

8. Clean cafeteria and dispose of trash.

9. Empty, clean and sanitize garbage cans and replaces liners daily.

10. Remove recycling from classrooms.

11. Prepare for and handle safety inspection.

12. Inspect fire extinguishers in accordance with established procedure and request necessary service.

13. Participate in fire and emergency drills.

14. Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

15. Assist in disaster and safety plans.

16. Move and arrange furniture, tables and chairs for meetings and events; prepares classrooms and other facilities for special events and meetings; respond to the custodial needs of District staff as assigned; cleans up furniture, equipment and debris following these special events or meetings.

17. Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during fall and spring break.

18. Assist with summer cleaning including scrubbing and resurfacing floors, stripping and waxing floors, washing walls, fixtures and furniture and painting interior.

19. Unlock and lock gates, restrooms and classrooms.

20. Check playgrounds and fields for trash, broken glass, sharp objects, etc.

 

21. Maintain equipment inventory; requisition, pick up and store cleaning supplies.

22. Maintains equipment to ensure proper working condition, cleanliness and stores equipment.

23. Call Animal Control to remove all dogs from campus.

24. Raise and lower flags, as needed.

25. Monitor facilities for vandalism, safety and fire hazards and report to appropriate personnel.

26. Secure facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization.

27. Maintains a safe working environment in the assigned area(s), notifying the appropriate resources of safety hazards observed and/or takes action to mitigate or eliminate potential hazardous conditions.

28. Follows Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions for handling and disposal of custodial products.

29. Make deliveries on and off campus.

30. Open and disarm the campus at start of workday, inspect for safety and any damages and securely locks down facility at end of day.

31. Will be called upon to clean bodily fluids such as: blood, vomit, urine and feces.

32. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the School Principal, Maintenance & Transportation Manager and/or Facility Supervisor.

 

Education

• High school diploma or GED.

• Any equivalent combination of education, training or experience.

 

 

Licenses or Certifications

• A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

• CPR and First Aid Certification

 

 

Experience

• Previous custodial and/or building maintenance experience.

 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

• Knowledge of basic cleaning methods, materials, procedures, techniques, chemicals, tools and equipment used in custodial work.

• Knowledge of methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures.

• Knowledge of proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

• Knowledge of basic first aid practices, procedures and techniques.

• Knowledge of work hazards and health and safety precautions and procedures in order to maintain a safe working environment.

• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets.

• Ability to bend, carry and lift 50 pounds, push and pull 50 pounds; climb ladders.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.

• Ability to utilize proper lifting techniques.

• Ability to speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• Ability to communicates a warm, caring and respectful atmosphere to visitors, staff and community members that focus on quality customer service.

• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships in the workplace.

Working Environment

• The work environment can be indoor or outdoor, subject to constant interruptions and fast paced with a high level of activity.

• The noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is usually moderate.

• The work environment includes regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles, dust, dirt, odors, cleaning agents, toxic or caustic chemicals, seasonal heat and cold, potential contact with body fluids and infectious disease.

 

Terms of Employment

• Nine-months, At-Will, hourly; benefits in accordance with Governing Board policies.
