This application will be for the following positions:

  • Preschool - 4th Grade STEM Principal (Riverside Traditional School)
  • 5th - 8th Grade STEM Principal (Kings Ridge Preparatory Academy)
  • 8th - 12th Grade H.S. Headmaster (Maricopa Institute of Technology)

TITLE: STEM Principal 

CLASSIFICATION: Administrative – Exempt

REPORTS TO: Associate Superintendent

SUMMARY: The STEM Principal will provide leadership for the planning, development, and implementation of a STEM approach to curricular design and data-driven instructional practices in an elementary school learning environment. The STEM Principal must be a visionary and advocate who has a full and clear understanding of the role and value that STEM education can play in the lives of students, and its capacity to empower all students to develop the critical and creative thinking skills required to succeed in college, private sector, and the global marketplace of the 21st century. The STEM Principal supports teachers in designing and delivering STEM instruction that is consistently ambitious and strengthens all students’ ability to engage in STEM content as critical thinkers, innovators and problem solvers. The principal is responsible for identifying professional development needs and supporting the staff in the implementation of the instruction and programming which ensures that all students master Common Core State Standards, International Benchmarks, Next Generation Science Standards and 21st Century Technical Skills which focus on professions that require a significant level of STEM knowledge and skills. The school principal will be under the direct supervision of the Superintendent and have responsibility to the Associate Superintendent and Director(s) for the implementation of District approved programs and procedures. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Interview and recommend the teaching, clerical, support staff, nursing, paraprofessional and custodial staff based on qualifications and District policies.
  2. Assign selected staff to positions best suited for potential success.
  3. Visit the classroom or other work places frequently and systematically; record areas of strength and weaknesses of employees.
  4. Objectively evaluate staff according to the District schedule, or as needed, and send written evaluation reports to the Human Resource Department.
  5. Provide written progress reports on detected areas of concern with each staff member on an ongoing basis.
  6. Alert staff to District newsletters, policies, and procedures through written staff bulletins and staff meetings, as needed.
  7. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, students, parents and the public.
  8. Supervise and assume responsibility for all school personnel in carrying out their responsibilities.
  9. Provide in-service to staff on job requirements and procedures on an ongoing basis and request assistance from District staff in areas in which specific expertise is needed.
  10. Inspect and review questionable and frequent illnesses and industrial injuries and alert staff when abuse is evident.
  11. Assign work responsibilities, inspect, and supervise the cleanliness and care of the school facility.
  12. Make thorough inspection of school facilities for compliance with fire, insurance, and health requirements.
  13. Assume the responsibility for school facility assigned, be available after hours in case of fire and severe vandalism, and provide security for facilities and equipment to protect the interest of the District.
  14. Submit loss reports, self-inspection reports, etc., as scheduled.
  15. Assign staff to correct deficiencies detected on self-inspection and health department reports.
  16. Requisition building maintenance for items not covered by school custodians.
  17. Provide for storage, maintenance, and updating of Policy Handbooks, State Statutes, Departmental Procedures, and Curriculum Maps, and yearly review pertinent information contained in these documents with staff.
  18. Provide for school handbook; staff bulletins; parent, staff, and student newsletters.
  19. Outline procedures for staff in-service and school personnel; inspect and assume full responsibility for accuracy in the registration of pupils, registers, attendance records, permanent record cards, confidential folders, inventory book, etc.
  20. Provide for the safe storage and management of all records and keep confidential all personnel and student records.
  21. Provide for the timely submission of reports, as scheduled.
  22. Enforce the prescribed goals, scope and sequence, objectives, and subject-area time allotments.
  23. Schedule students to regular and special classes.
  24. Provide for regular student assemblies to enrich the needs of the school and community.
  25. Require and review daily lesson plans of all instructional staff to determine coverage of common core standards, objectives, scope and sequence.
  26. Encourage and enforce homework policy.
  27. Review teachers’ record books for objective recording of student progress.
  28. Requisition supplies, materials, and textbooks to support program and effectively manage the school allocations provided.
  29. Evaluates student progress in the instructional program by means that include the maintaining of up-to-date student data.
  30. Review student and class achievement with each instructional staff member and alert staff to deficiencies and successes.
  31. Establish a high expectancy level achievement for all instructional programs and activities.
  32. Make recommendations for supplemental services for students and staff to increase all areas of achievement.
  33. Objectively assess overall student achievement and make recommendations to staff not meeting expectancy levels.
  34. Assume full responsibility for school achievement.
  35. Enforce District policies on student promotion, retention, and state graduation requirements.
  36. Communicate the high expectancy level of discipline to staff and students.
  37. Plan and implement an effective student discipline program to guide consistent procedures for student discipline.
  38. Establish schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in classroom and non-classroom areas (including before and after school).
  39. Investigate reported misbehavior and provide due process for each individual student.
  40. Enforce the discipline procedure outlined by the District.
  41. Oversee discipline procedures to insure fair and equitable punishment.
  42. Review and make final recommendation for suspension, according to District procedures.
  43. Assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of students, employees and visitors.
  44. Work to establish a low percentage of absence of students and contact parents and take court action for attendance abusers, if necessary.
  45. Be available to parents and return parent calls to solve children/school problems.
  46. Establish and maintain an active Parent/Teacher Organization with regularly scheduled meetings attended by teacher representatives.
  47. Provide the use of school facilities to community groups as per the District’s policy and procedures.
  48. Provides opportunities for parent and community forums to demonstrate the relevance of STEM education.
  49. Work with community groups to provide service to students needing assistance.
  50. Attend and participate in scheduled administrative meetings.
  51. Set the tone for appropriate dress for the school environment.
  52. Frequently review District policies and procedures to enable appropriate enforcement.
  53. Attend all Board meetings as required by the Superintendent and be prepared to present innovative programs to Board and public via School Spotlight Presentation.
  54. Provides activities that facilitate the professional growth of the school staff and enhance the quality of the instructional program.
  55. Provides direction and leadership in the development of a comprehensive STEM curriculum.
  56. Facilitates a short and long-term plan for the school to integrate the following STEM principles into the instructional program: Technology infusion; rigorous, project-based learning experiences; internationalized school-to-career connections for students; 21st Century Technical Skills.
  57. Maintains and ensures a consistent, rigorous and equitable educational experience in for all students in reading, math science and technology education.
  58. Ensures that teachers utilize curriculum documents (curriculum maps/pacing guides) that contain the core curriculum benchmarks, resources and common assessments that are aligned with the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.
  59. Provides instructional support to teachers using best practices and research-based instructional methods.
  60. Collaborates with universities, as well as state, national and local organizations to promote STEM education.
  61. Facilitates student participation in national and local STEM/math/science organizations and competitions.
  62. Ability to recognize areas of concern relating to STEM education issues and proposes or recommends appropriate solutions to problems.
  63. Assesses outcomes of programs, reflects and makes adjustments for continuous improvement of processes, systems, methods and student experience.
  64. Actively recruits students to increase student enrollment.
  65. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Associate Superintendent and/or Superintendent.

 

EDUCATION:

  • Advanced degree in education, educational administration, curriculum/instruction or a related area from an accredited college or university is required with a strong emphasis on data-informed instruction that raises student achievement as measured by standardized test assessments.

 LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

  • A valid Arizona elementary and/or secondary teaching certificate, required
  • A valid Arizona administrator’s certificate for Principal, required
  • Full SEI Endorsement, required
  • ASA Highly Qualified Evaluator Training I & II, preferred
  • A valid Arizona administrator’s certificate for Superintendent, preferred
  • Math or Science background and/or certification/HQ, preferred
  • Doctorate degree in education and/or a STEM field, preferred
  • A valid Fingerprint Clearance Card

 EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with a diverse student, parent, and community population, preferred
  • Experience working with English Language Learning students, preferred
  • At least five (5) years of successful teaching experience, preferably in a STEM-related area
  • A minimum of three (3) years administrative experience in a principal or assistant principal position, preferred

 SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • Advanced technology expertise and experience, required
  • Knowledge and experience in advanced technologies such as (preferred):
    • 3D Printing
    • Nano Technology and it application
    • Coding and App Development
    • Electron Microscopology
    • Drone application and aeronautical engineering
    • Intermediate and advanced Robotics
    • Intermediate and advanced experience in chemistry, physics, and forensic science.
    • Knowledge of structural and electrical engineering.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, science or engineering, preferred
  • Experience with STEM education and knowledge of STEM integration throughout the curriculum, preferred
  • Knowledge and experience promoting hands-on and project/problem based learning, preferred
  • Organized, detail oriented, efficient worker
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately.
  • Enthusiastic, flexible, outgoing personality with excellent “people” skills
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to develop insightful conclusions and strategic solutions based on the analysis
  • Ability to exercise strict confidentiality in handling sensitive information
  • Ability to work with people to develop and implement a team approach to management, required
  • Advanced training in instruction, curriculum, technology integration, and student management, preferred
  • Ability to speak, write, and read Spanish fluently, preferred
  • Knowledge of contemporary human resource management theory, principles and practices, preferred
  • Working knowledge of State requirements, curriculum and personnel management, preferred
  • Knowledge of Arizona school law and finance, preferred
  • History of good health and consistent work habits, with minimal number of absences, preferred

WORKING CONDTIONS:

The working environment is fast paced, focused on student achievement, and revolves around positive staff and community.  The working environment is primarily an office setting with some travel between schools and district office.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYEMENT:

  • Student achievement will be the major goal and focus of the school district and administration
  • Twelve-month year, Administrative – Exempt

Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of administrative staff to include but not limited to the following:

  • STEM Walk-Through Instrument
