TITLE: Child Nutrition Services Manager
CLASSIFICATION: Professional – Exempt
REPORTS TO: Associate Superintendent
SUMMARY: The Child Nutrition Services Manager will maintain high quality food services which are financially self-sustaining and encourage innovative ideas of management, involving local schools, for increased participation within the program budget.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer and direct the District Child Nutrition Services Program in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, local and state health ordinances, and district policies.
- Evaluate and update the Child Nutrition Services Program, keeping abreast of innovations and developments in the field.
- Plan and develop goals for a comprehensive financially self-sustaining child nutrition services program.
- Establish and implement budgeting and financial management systems consistent with local, state and federal requirements.
- Establish and implement procedures for adequate control of foods, supplies, equipment and labor.
- Supervise the preparation of accurate reports in food, labor and operating costs.
- Monitor income and expenditures and compare to budget on a regular basis.
- Establish financial policies that will permit the serving of nutritionally adequate and satisfying meals at a minimum cost.
- Supervise and direct all child nutrition staff with regard to performance in food preparations, service, sanitation, accountability and cafeteria clean-up. Responsible and accountable for creating, implementing and supervising the cafeteria cleans-up. This may include but not limited to creating daily clean-up schedule for all CNS staff.
- Establish staffing formulas and performance standards for all food service personnel.
- Develop and implement a plan for professional growth and certification for the child nutrition staff providing appropriate in-service training.
- Prepare handbooks and procedural manuals for child nutrition staff.
- Establish a system for the procurement, distribution, receiving, and storage of food and non-food materials and establish inventory control factors.
- Develop specifications for food and non-food materials.
- Implement sanitation standards and devise a system for control of microbiological infection that complies with federal (OSHA), state and local safety regulations.
- Establish a child nutrition program marketing system with the collaboration of the supervisor and School Principal for the district and establish procedures for conducting surveys to determine customer preferences and district needs.
- Develop and implement standards for operating a nutrition program that serves appealing food that is highly nutritional.
- Facilitate the application of dietary guidelines in menu planning and recipe modification and evaluate current research data and apply that which is relevant.
- Develop and recommend changes in child nutrition services program policies and procedures to district administrators, including policies and procedures related to processing and cashiering.
- Maintain effective working relationships with appropriate members of all departments in the district.
- Keeps Associate Superintendent and Executive Director of Business Services apprised of cafeteria operations on a regular basis.
- Consult and resolve with School Principal any problems of mutual concern involving the child nutrition services or personnel.
- Attend meetings, workshops and in-service training to continue professional development.
- Perform any and all job related duties assigned by supervisor.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in nutrition and related coursework with an emphasis in business management. Business related experience in managing an institutional food operation could substitute for management education.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid Maricopa County Food Handler’s Card
- Valid Maricopa County Manager’s Certificate
- School Nutrition Association certification is desirable
- A valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of experience in supervision of a large institutional food preparation program.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFACTIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to administer and supervise a complete Child Nutrition Services Program within a school system or large institutional operation.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise budgeting, accounting and purchasing functions pertaining to food service operations.
- Demonstrated strong leadership and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with administration and cafeteria staff.
- Demonstrated ability to make good decisions.
- Ability to maintain a safe work environment for self and others.
- Proficiency in English and general communication skills (oral and written) for providing work directions and interacting with staff, students, and administration.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The working environment is the normal office setting with travel to school sites. Work environment also includes working in the cafeteria kitchen and dining room that includes exposure to noise and vibrations from kitchen equipment, fumes and odors from grease traps, and heat from stoves and ovens.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Twelve-month year, Professional Exempt; benefits in accordance with Board policies.
EVALUATION:
- Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of administrative staff.
